Flexible office space is becoming more important to organisations, in this fast moving digital era, traditional long leases are no longer fulfilling charities or social enterprises’ needs. Flexible desk space can include the option to change office locations, amount of desks and additional services.
With nearly 20 years experience in delivering in these areas we thought we’d share some insight in to how our office space facilities are thought through to ensure we deliver to the needs of over 170 organisations and 1,400 trustees, staff and volunteers.
It’s all in the planning
In an article* in FMJ (November 2018) it suggested likening the office space to a small village saying ‘Small villages evolve over time to accommodate lots of different people from different backgrounds and generations.’
This is an important factor when planning office space layout as it will help ensure that facilities are provided not just for an organisation as a collective but for people within the organisation that have different working styles.
Getting the balance right
The key elements at each of our locations include;
- Dedicated desk space – providing a physical desk and area for your organisation and those individuals that need an office presence. This space is entirely flexible allowing your to increase and reduce desk numbers as needed.
- Hot desk facilities – perfect for those who tend to work remotely either occasionally or frequently or visitors. Hot desks can be booked online by the hour, half day or day.
- Communal areas – at each location communal kitchens and seating areas are available providing great opportunity to not only engage and collaborate with co-workers but with those from other organisations.
- Private meeting/conference rooms – although open plan space is great we understand there is still a need for private rooms too, whether it be internal or external meetings, training, a conference, an event or, something else we provide over 40 meeting rooms catering for 2 – 60 people that can be booked online by the hour, half day or full day.

At CAN our mission is to support social organisations to maximise their impact, sustainability and where appropriate growth. We deliver this by addressing three key barriers; Premises, Skill and Finance. The physical facilities are just one area of creating the right environment and culture, over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing further insight on community and collaboration.
